For my husband-to-be and I we had concluded that we had been together longerthan some marriages at this point and the idea of a traditional wedding was not what we wanted. Since neither of us had a “church home” it dawned on us to just have a littlesoiree and get married in our home. Once my husband-to-be agreed with the plan. I started looking up Justices of the Peace. My only criteria was that our JP be of African American descent. Reason being although we were not getting married in a church we were still going to “jump the broom” which is a tradition rooted our culture of African American history and to us only an African American would understand the importance of incorporating that into our ceremony. With that being said, I googled “Justices of the Peace” and what was great for me is that some of their bios included a picture, which made mysearch even easier. There was one that stood out - Justice Bobbie Gill -Brooks and it was not what I expected. An African woman Justice of the Peace!!! This thrilled me to no end and I called her immediately to see if she was available on our wedding date and she was!Everything from that point was so classy and professional she met with us in our home where the wedding would take place, she asked us questions like how we met, do we have children, what are our shared interests, etc. And with that one interview Justice Bobbie wrote our vows and pretty much captured ourlove story and what brought us to the “altar”or the “fireplace” in our case.Justice Bobbie incorporated a special ring ceremony that included all of our family and friends, which everyone loved! My wedding was just as fabulous as any church wedding in my opinion. Bobi was an absolute pleasure to work with. From our initial meeting, we knew instantly she was the right person to officiate our wedding. Not only does Bobi have a warm personality, she is professional, reliable and most of all well- spoken. She has a gift of public speaking and her calming presence really put us at ease the day of. She really took the time to get to know us and our story and wrote a beautiful, personalized ceremony. The ceremony was so touching and beautiful, there was not a dry eye in the crowd.
